Formatting (html or plain text)

General setting

I have my thunderbird set up to use HTML as I use frequently, but I also like to use Plain Text on specific occassions:

  1. Right click on mail account name and select 'Settings'
  2. select 'Composition & Addressing'
  3. Select 'Compose messages in HTML'
  4. click on OK

I also make sure all my emails are sent in both formats, sothat the recipient can also choose how they wish to read the message. Tools > Options > Composition > General tab / Menu icon > Options > Options > Composition > General tab

  1. click on 'Send options' button'
  2. select 'Send the message in both Plain Text and HTML'
  3. click on OK

If you have specific people in your address books who always want to receive in Plain Text format, there is an option to set this up.

  1. Click on 'Address Book'
  2. select the address book to see contacts.
  3. double click on contact in list to open EDit Conatct window.
  4. On the first 'Contact' tab, at the bottom
  5. 'Prefers toreceive messages formatted as 'select 'Plain Text'
  6. click on OK

If I click on 'Write' it will always offer the HTML format. However, if you hold down Shift key + click on Write, it will open in Plain Text format.

Word wrapping:

  1. Navigate to: Hamburger menu > Preferences > Advanced > General > Config Editor
  2. Search for wrap and make configure the following settings to be:
    • mailnews.wraplength: 0 (zero)

Possibly also:

  • mail.wrap_long_lines: false
  • plain_text.wrap_long_lines: false
